What is Massage Therapy?

Massage Therapy is the manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscles, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person's health and well-being.

    Pregnancy Massage

    Pregnancy massage (also known as prenatal massage) is a form of Swedish massage using a side-lying pregnancy pillow that allows you to lay comfortably and supported on your sides during your massage. Specific techniques used are geared towards helping relieve the discomforts the body goes through during the different stages of pregnancy.

    Hot Stone Massage

    Hot Stone massage incorporates the use of heated basalt stones as a tool used during the massage. These heated stones can be placed on top of the body in specific areas and are also used in the therapists' hands as they are used in a gliding manner across the different areas of the body, such as back, legs, arms etc. The deep heat helps increase circulation and blood flow, allowing for tensed muscles to relax and your body and mind to drift into a deep state of relaxation.

    Aromatherapy

    Incorporating aromatherapy (essential oils) into your massage therapy treatment can help aid and encourage a more restful state for your mind and body. Various oils have different effects on the body, such as using Lavender to promote relaxation, eucalyptus oil to help with decongestion and peppermint oil to help decrease pain. Indulge your senses by adding essential oils into your next massage therapy treatment.

    Cupping

    Cupping is an effective way to help relax tense muscles, decrease pain, increase circulation, and help breakdown stubborn adhesions within muscle tissues. Cupping stems from ancient Chinese medicine and is a technique that uses suction cups that can be suctioned in place on the body or used in a gliding motion (within person tolerance), as felt in Swedish massage.

    The suction from the cups causes the skin and underlying tissues to be pulled up or lifted and the negative pressure inside the cups helps the muscle fibers to elongated and relax and helps rid the body of muscular waste byproducts.
    Cupping can cause some marking that can range from light to darker in colour. Typically, they aren't painful and last 3-5 days. The darker the colour indicates an area that more affected.

    Gua Sha

    Gua Sha (Chinese word for scraping), is an Asian medicine technique that helps decrease chronic muscle pain, tension, scar tissue and restrictions. A smooth tool, often a jade stone is used with pressure in unidirectional strokes to scrap along the tissues of the body.

    Mild colour and bruising/bumps will raise to the surface of the skin, which indicated an area of the body that has trauma or buildup. It can be mildly uncomfortable but is done within a person's tolerance. This technique coupled with massage can help decrease muscle tension and "knots", improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and helps restore the body's immune system.

    Acupuncture

    Acupuncture is a technique used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is often used to help restore the body's energy flow and decrease acute and chronic pain and inflammation. Single-use, thin needles are inserted at specific points on the body which help to improve the movement of energy and blood flow.

    Coupled with massage which uses rhythmic, long strokes, enhances the effectiveness and outcome of both techniques. Massage allows the body to relax and become more receptive to the acupuncture, allowing the acupuncture points used to be more powerful and effective. The needles are typically left in the body approximately 20-30 minutes.

    Reiki

    Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is technique that involves the use of gentle hand movements to help guide the flow of energy of "life force energy" through the body. This is a form of Japanese energy healing and is a holistic approach to healing and helps reduce anxiety and stress and improves balance, promoting relaxation, putting you in a positive emotional and spiritual mental state.
